Water Quality

About

Water is a vital resource to Weld County residents and it is the goal of the Environmental Health Division to work to preserve and protect the quality of this resource. The division works to assist the Water Quality Control Division (WQCD) of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), the agency charged with implementing federal and State water quality control programs in Colorado to achieve this goal. The regulatory responsibilities of the WQCD include:

  • Implementation of use classification and numeric standards for surface water established by the Water Quality Control Commission (WQCC).
  • Issuance of discharge permits.
  • Enforcement of the Primary Drinking Water Regulations.
  • Administration of loans for the construction of publicly owned treatment works.

The laboratory at the Weld County Department of Public Health & Environment also provides water quality testing. Please contact us at (970) 304-6415.

Cisterns

The Board of County Commissioners has declared the purpose of Chapter 14, Article III of the Weld County Code is to protect the public health and eliminate and control disease, infection and, contamination. The Board of County Commissioners further declares it to be in the public's interest to establish minimum standards, rules and regulations for the use of cisterns for a drinking water source.

A cistern is a receptacle for holding liquids, usually water. They are commonly used in areas where water is scarce, either because it is rare or because it has been depleted due to heavy use.

A cistern is NOT a holding tank for another potable water source. A cistern would constitute a property owner's ONLY water source.

The use of a cistern for a drinking (potable) water source for humans is prohibited unless the occupants obtain a Cistern Usage Permit (CUP).
