Purpose
This program provides financial assistance only to people who are disabled and not able to work at any job for a period of six months or more. It has no medical coverage. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 – 59. This program supplements income up to $140.00 per month as of February 1, 2011.
Resource/Asset Limit
The asset limit is $2,000.00 for a single person and $3,000.00 for a couple. Exempt assets include the home the applicant lives in and one automobile with a value of $4,500.00 or less. Automobiles which are verified to be used for employment or medical transportation will not be counted as an asset even if they exceed the $4,500.00 limit. Life insurance up to $1,500.00 in face value is not counted as well as pre-need burial plans that cannot be sold.
Additional Requirement
All applicants must apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) through the Social Security Administration. They must also verify their disability and its length by asking their medical provider to complete a special State form. This form is given to applicants at the time of interview.
