Weld County Weed Division - Control Techniques

There are multiple ways to control weeds. Every method has its pros and cons. The Weld County Weed Division encourages landowners to follow Best Management Practices or BMP’s. BMP’s use a combination of control techniques to help you reach your desired control level. Traditionally when we talk about control practices they fall into four categories.

Mechanical – Mowing, disking or tilling the weed stands multiple times throughout the year keeping the plants from going to seed.

Cultural –Utilize desirable vegetation to compete with weeds. Desirable species depend upon land use desired.  Or the use of fire.

Biological - Use of insects, fungi, bacteria, diseases that in a natural habitat typically feed on plant. Or Use of livestock for grazing the plants.

Chemical - The use of herbicides to control the existing weeds. Historically used as a stand-alone weed control program.

The techniques selected will depend on the targeted weed species, its growth patterns, future plans for the area, and personal choices. Generally speaking, when combined techniques are used greater root control and longer stand reductions occur.
